Exercise #1
Read this blog and find out about the program.
Welcome to the Alameda County Library Learning 2.0 program & blog.
Learning 2.0 is an online self-discovery program that encourages you to learn more about emerging technologies on the web that are changing the way people, libraries and society access information and communicate with each other.
The content for this self-discovery program was borrowed from:
Learning 2.0 program designed by Helene Blowers, the Technology Director of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Learning 2.0 has been enthusiastically promoted at CLA, Internet Librarian and other library conferences.
Over the course of the 9 weeks, this website will highlight “23 Things” and discovery exercises to help you become familiar with blogging, RSS news feeds, tagging, wikis, podcasting, online applications, and video and image hosting sites.
To familiarize yourself with this project, be sure to read the About page. The FAQs should answer most of your questions about this program. We recommend that you subscribe to our RSS feed as well.
So fasten your seat belts, grab your mouse and get ready for a discovery adventure… and remember it’s OK to PLAY in the library and have fun!
Exercise #2
Discover some pointers from life-long learners to help nurture your own learning process.
Among libraries, lifelong learning is one of those core values we shelve our books by. So it makes sense that before we embark on this new online learning and discovery journey that we should take a few minutes to review a few habits that can assist in creating lifelong learners.
These habits, called the Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners, will provide you with a refresher on what it means to be a lifelong learner.
The Seven and ½ Habits tutorial is about 14 minutes.
You may want to print out the Attachments (top right corner in the tutorial). There is a short list of the 7-1/2 habits and the contract for your own use. The contract will not be turned in–it is for your own personal use should you choose to use it.
Note: At the end of the tutorial Helene Blowers invites her staff to submit their comments and questions to the We Value Your Opinion! link. Please do not use that link. It goes to Lori Reed at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Instead, send your comments via your regular Outlook email to Web Services using your staff email or add a comment below.
Discovery Exercise:
1. Make sure you have headphones or speakers attached to your computer.
2. Open up the 7 & 1/2 Habits online tutorial and view the online tutorial. The tutorial was developed by the training specialists at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
3. As you watch and listen, write down which habit among the 7 & 1/2 that is easiest for you and which is hardest. You will use your personal blog (which you will set up next) to post your thoughts about lifelong learning.
Have fun! If you haven’t jumped on board yet, it’s never too late to become a lifelong learner. Remember to use the Checklist to log your “things”.
The Checklist is a database that Web Services is using and not a live part of the blog. This means you will need to use the “Back” button to go back to the Learning 2.0 blog as the links are not “live” on this page. [Update: Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and "Update" your 23 Things before leaving the Sign-up/Checklist page.]
Up Next: Creating your blog so you can begin recording your journey.

Can you direct me to the tutorial? I don’t see it on the top right hand corner.
Rebecca, just click on the “7 & 1/2 Habits” under Number 2 and another window should come up with the tutorial.
Thanks! I found it.
I tried to open the 7 1/2 Habits tutorial and the URL (http://www.plcmc.org/public/learning/player.html) wouldn’t open. (I clicked the link an hour ago and the page is still loading…)
Are there particular settings I need to change on my browser?
Vivian-You may need an upgrade on your Windows Media Player. It shouldn’t take more than a few seconds to open. Call the Tech Hotline and let them check.
I couldn’t dowload any of the attachments – I will try another computer.
Be sure to send a Help Ticket for the computer or call the Hotline so that the software can be updated.
Wasn’t able to download the contract–a box came up saying our security system would not allow it to download.
I have sent an All Exchange User email with the attachments included. Some of your Internet Explorer filters are “helping” you a little too much!
I had no trouble with the tutorial or download, but I cannot get the checklist to update. When I click the update button nothing seems to happen.
P.S. that eye is kinda scary.
Can you call me now?
I’m crushed you don’t like my baby blue eye!
BTW (by the way) you too can have a scary eye or other picture to represent you once you set up your blog. On your Dashboard, under Options there is a Profile button and a place to upload your image. More on that next week!
Very informative. Great tips.
